Why should I give up smoking?

To give you and your partner the best chance of conceiving a healthy baby, you need to make sure your sperm is in tip top shape. And as you’ve probably guessed, this means giving up smoking!

Smoking affects the quality of your sperm. It can increase the number of abnormal sperm and affect their mobility– very important considering the journey they have to reach and fertilise your partner’s egg.

Research also shows that smoking can cause babies to be born prematurely. So if ever you needed a good reason to quit, this is it!

Cutting down on alcohol

It’s a good idea to give up or cut down on drinking too. Even small amounts of alcohol can lower your sperm count. It also stops your body absorbing the minerals and vitamins you need to produce good quality sperm.
