Helping with breastfeeding

Jenny Chew, Careline Advisor

Having a new baby can definitely be a frustrating time. For moms, because they've got such a big job to do. And for dads, because they feel a bit like a spare part. But there's actually quite a lot you can do to help. You’ll find a few useful ideas below.

Have you thought about expressing?

One way of giving your partner a rest and letting her have a longer sleep is for her to express some of her breast milk. That way you can take over one of the night-time feeds, which can make a huge difference. It also gives you some special bonding time with your baby as you hold them close.

Some women find expressing milk difficult or painful so this isn't always an option. But if she can do it, it's best to wait until your baby's 6 to 8 weeks old. They need time to get used to feeding from the breast first and the bottle could confuse them in the early days!

There’s still plenty you can do

If expressing isn’t an option or it’s too early to do so there is plenty you can still do. For instance you could do some of the jobs around the home whilst your partner is breastfeeding. Spend time with your baby, have fun, give them lots of cuddles and take them for walks. This will give your partner time to rest, help you bond with your new baby and ensure you don’t feel like a spare part!
