Treat your child to a fun and healthy snack this festive season. These candy canes not only look good, but taste delicious too! This is also an excellent recipe to involve your child. He or she will enjoy helping you make the candy canes and playing with the dough.
Ingredients
• 1 1/4 cup plain flour
• 1/4 tsp salt
• 1/2 cup butter
• 1/2 cup fine sugar
• 1 small egg
• 2 tsp vanilla essence
• 1/2 tbs red food colouring
• 1/2 tbs green food colouring
• 100's and 1000's (coloured sprinkles)
Method
1. Mix salt and flour together.
2. In a separate bowl, mix butter, egg, sugar and vanilla essence.
3. Mix in flour and separate into 2 portions.
4. Mix one portion with red food colouring and the other with green food colouring.
5. Refrigerate for about 45 minutes.
6. Roll out a 10-12 cm 'snake' in red dough and another 10-12 cm 'snake' in green.
7. Twist the 2 coloured dough together to form a candy cane.
8. Arrange on a baking tray and sprinkle with 100's and 1000's.
9. Bake at 160°C for about 10-15 minutes.
