Easy and quick to make, this savoury snack is guaranteed to satisfy your child's mid-afternoon hunger pangs. It's packed with bone-building nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus and magnesium from cheese, milk and sesame seeds and dietary fibre from oats.
Ingredients
• 1 cup oats
• 1 cup plain flour, sifted
• 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese
• 1 tbsp baking powder
• 1/2 tsp baking soda
• 1 tsp ground pepper
• 2 tbsp chopped chives (optional)
• 3 tbsp margarine
• 1 cup milk (reconstituted from milk powder suitable to the age of your child)
• 1 egg white, slightly beaten
• 1/3 cup sesame seeds
Method
1. Heat oven to 220°C.
2. In a mixing bowl, combine the first seven ingredients and mix well.
3. Lightly rub in margarine until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
4. Pour in milk and mix well.
5. Transfer mixture onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently.
6. Roll our dough into a rectangle shape about 1/2 inch thick and cut into 4 x 1/2 inch strips with a sharp knife.
7. Place strips onto an ungreased baking sheet. Brush tops with egg white and sprinkle liberally with sesame seeds.
8. Bake 10 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.
