Insufficient fibre in the diet is the main cause of constipation. The current recommendation for fibre intake in children is age plus 5 grams per day. Therefore, a 2 year old child needs approximately 7 grams a day. This can be easily met by offering:

1/2 cup of cooked vegetables + 1/2 medium fresh fruit + 1/3 cup cooked beans

To prevent constipation:

• Offer a variety and larger servings of fruits and vegetables.
• Include cooked beans and lentils in your child's diet, such as baked beans for breakfast.
• Try high-fibre snacks such as whole-wheat crackers.

At the same time, encourage your child to drink more fluids.
