Cholesterol dietary fibre
Dietary fibre, especially soluble fibre, has been shown to help reduce blood cholesterol. Fruits, vegetables, legumes (dried beans, lentils) and oats are high in soluble fibre.
Everyday, over 50% of the cholesterol made in the body is used to make bile. Bile is needed to digest and absorb the fat that we eat. Usually, bile is reabsorbed and reused. However, soluble fibre is thought to bind to bile in the intestines and both are eliminated through the bowels. When this happens, more cholesterol is needed to replace the lost bile causing a lowering effect of blood cholesterol.
Dietary fibre also helps keep the cholesterol you eat from being absorbed by your body.
