Heating baby food

The following are ways you can heat food for your baby:

In a pan of simmering water

• Place small amount of water in pan
• Heat water to simmering, NOT boiling
• Put food in heat-resistant glass dish
• Place dish of food in water until food is warmed
• Remove dish. If dish is hot, transfer food to plastic serving dish
• Stir food and test temperature by tasting

In a microwave oven - this is not the best way of heating food for your baby, as even well-stirred foods could have dangerous hot spots. If you have to use the microwave oven, here how you should go about it:

• Put food in a microwave oven-safe dish
• Heat food according to heating guidelines of food item or that stipulated on the microwave oven
• Stir food and always test temperature by touching a spoonful to the outside of your upper lip. If food feels hot, leave food to cool before offering to baby.
