Coffee and tea have received some rather bad press over the years with lots of 'scary' stuff being publicised especially on the internet. So what should a pregnant mother do?

Medically speaking, all scientific evidence point to this amount: 300mg / day for caffeine is safe for pregnant women.

Having more than 300mg/ day of caffeine is not recommended as it has some suggestions of health effects to the baby such as low birth weight. The risk is only slight but may be significant for a baby who is already at risk, e.g. mother has high blood pressure.

As for the other 'scary' stuff like birth defects, most of these reports came out of animal studies where lab animals were injected with caffeine sometimes amounting to 30 cups of brewed coffee a day.

Then, does a pregnant mother need to give up coffee, tea, cola drinks all together? For those of you who love your cuppa youll be glad to know that the answer is "no", as most researchers agree that a moderate amount of caffeine not exceeding 300mg/ day is safe and acceptable.

What is 300mg of caffeine? Here are a few examples of food containing caffeine and the estimated caffeine content.

The amount of caffeine increases with the amount of coffee powder used and the method or making the coffee. Generally drip method of brewing coffee will have higher caffeine than percolated types. The longer you have the tea bag in the hot water the more caffeine will be in your drink.

It is wise to watch the amount of regular cola drinks you consume as they also contain a lot of sugar - some up to 6-8 teaspoons of sugar per 375ml can.
