Warming milk for baby

Babies need breast milk or formula milk cool or warm, and NOT hot. So, when warming milk for your baby, do NOT heat it to suit your taste as a hot bottle may be harmful. The right temperature of milk is blood heat, that is, a temperature that feels comfortably warm on the back of your hand, and not scalding hot.

The best way to warm milk for baby is to:

• Use a bottle warmer or
• A pan of warm water on the stove or
• Under a stream of warm water

If you warm milk in a microwave oven, you should bear these facts in mind:

• Microwaving may cause hot spots in bottles; although the bottle can remain cool, the liquid inside can be burning hot and can burn an infant's mouth.
• Avoid using bottles with plastic liners as the liner may explode
• Use a microwave-safe bottle and microwave for 30 seconds, gently shake the bottle to thoroughly distribute hot areas, then test the liquid on the back of your hand. The milk should feed tepid, not hot.
