Can We Eat Pineapple During Pregnancy?

Careline

Arora Valley answered:

Fresh pineapple contains digestive enzymes that can help promote regular digestion during pregnancy. It is also a good source of vitamin C, which can help to boost the immune system and fight off harmful infections. Also there is a belief that eating pineapple during pregnancy can cause miscarriage. Pineapple indeed contains a small amount of bromelain, an enzyme which has been known to stimulate and thin the cervix, leading to early labor or miscarriage. However, there is little research to support this theory and you would need to eat as many as seven pineapples to have any effect. Pineapple is a highly acidic fruit, so it might cause or worsen heartburn. Pineapple also contains a high concentration of sugar, which can be harmful to women with gestational diabetes. You should eat it in moderation and watch for any signs of problems before your due date. Still, if you would like to play safe, eat other fruits instead.

I didn't take any both fresh and cooked pineapple during both pregnancies. Drool all the time during chinese new years over the pineapple tarts. LOL. But was told that cooked pineapple is actually OK as cooking may soften the enzymes so the effect is lesened.

I did eat pineapples during my pregnancy and don't really believe in those old wives tales. However the rule that I follow is: eat everything in moderation. Don't eat one particular food in excess, just nice will do. In this case, you can be sure that the amount will not be huge enough to cause any harm to the baby.

During my first visit to my gynae to confirm my pregnancy, my gynae finished the appointment with things to avoid: "alcohol, tea, coffee and pineapple". I left the visit extremely confused...why pineapple specifically. It turns out that pineapple contains an enzyme that induces labor. Hence it is not good to eat pineapple. Also, old wives tales claims that pineapple is too cooling for the body and should not be eaten during pregnancy. However, my mother in law told me that her old neighbour used to be able to eat nothing but pineapple throughout the pregnancy! Couldnt keep anything down but pineapple and she and the baby turned out ok! So it is really up to you to see which you prefer. But I guess to play safe, avoid the pineapple.
