Breastfeeding is the best for babies and a healthy diet / maternal nutrition is important when breastfeeding. A decision not to breastfeed can be difficult to reverse. Infant formula is suitable from birth when babies are not breastfed. It is recommended that all formula milks be used on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian, pharmacist, or other professional responsible for maternal and child care and the financial implications should be considered. All preparation and feeding instructions should be followed carefully as inappropriate preparation could lead to health hazards.

Green Stool in Babies and The Usage of Jin Feng San

"It's a myth in Chinese to believe that green stools in a child is associated with a scare. Green stools are always normal and is common for formula fed toddlers. Kids' digestive systems work a bit more quickly than adults, so it's not uncommon to see undigested bits of food and colorful fragments from previous meals and snacks. Green stools can be the result of eating lots of green, leafy veggies or drinking and eating foods that contain dark purple dye. In Chinese, "Jin Feng San" is believed to help calm children. But there is no scientific proof that it can help reduce green stools incidence. According to TCM, the following indicate that a child may have food stagnation and heat in the intestines: a very pungent stool, sluggish bowel movement; dark green stool with undigested food or milk, disturbed sleep or stomach pain. It is thus best to avoid eating hot or spicy flavor and deep fried food. Also, food should be well cooked, and less food should be given right before they go to bed."

"Contrary to popular belief, green stools does not necessarily mean your child suffered a scare during the day. It is common and to spot green stools in an infant. Some reasons for having green stools could be the introduction of solids, green vegetables or feeding your baby with iron-fortified formula milk. A frightened baby may experience transient loose green stools but do note that it is usually accompanied with a sudden onset of poor sleeping patterns and night terror. According to TCM theory, the colour, smell and consistency of stools are indications of the child's internal organ health. Green stools in a child may be due to Liver-pathogenic wind or Food Stagnation. Symptoms associated with Liver-pathogenic wind include poor sleep, night terror, easily frightened, loose green stools. In this case, Jing Feng San may be prescribed. Symptoms associated with Food Stagnation include abdominal bloating, stomach pain, crying before excretion, foul smelling green stools with undigested particles, poor appetite and poor sleep. It is therefore important to first consult a TCM Physician regarding the underlying cause of your child's green stools before administering any medication."
